Chickens

We order 50 Barred Rock chicks; brown egg layers.  For the first five weeks they had to live on the porch with heat lamps (until they got their feathers).  They moved out to their chicken coup on July 17th, 2011.  The chicken coup is set up with a large building and a fenced in area for protection from large birds and coyotes.  When they are full grown they will be able to roam outside of the chicken coup/fenced in area during the day and at night they will get put back in to keep them safe.  Expect farm fresh eggs once they are old enough to lay eggs.

From the first week we had them.

2 Weeks In

Everything has been in for two weeks now.  Chris took the tractor out to cultivate, which keeps the weeds down and stimulates growth.  So far the garden is looking good.

Getting Started

June 5 & 6, 2011

Planting Time!  Due to the all the rain, we had to delay planting until early June .  Bob and Chris worked hard on getting all the veggies and items that could be planted with the Jang Clean Seeder the first day.  The next day they got the rest in with the behind the tractor with the large planter.

This year we planted zucchini, squash, pumpkin, sweet corn, turnips, radish, sunflowers, cucumbers, watermelon, honeydew melons, cantaloupe, green beans and peas.  We also planted tomatoes and peppers but the hail destroyed them.
